Course Overview

English is spoken and written every day around the world to communicate. If your first language is not English and you want to improve your skills, this course is for you.

Covering the four main skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, you will gain nationally recognised qualifications in English language, ICT, maths and employability skills.

In addition, you will learn about UK culture and take part in events to celebrate your own. You’ll also take part in fun competitions to develop job interview skills and entrepreneurial skills, and develop the confidence to live, study and work in the UK successfully.

This course is taught at our Rochdale campus, located in the Rochdale Town Centre of Greater Manchester.

Prosp User 2

This course will enable you to develop your English skills in a variety of ways. You will:

  • Write forms, emails, articles, reviews, reports, job application letters.

  • Learn about different vocational areas in the college to help with progression/career choices as your language skills develop.

  • Practice the English speaking skills to support you in your daily lives and help you speak to and understand doctors, work colleagues, teachers and members of the community.

  • Read and understand information such as the news, articles, instructions and books.

  • Have opportunities to make friends at college through the classroom activities and enrichment opportunities.

  • Develop organisational skills, study skills, research skills and employability skills.

  • Develop IT skills through the use of computers and applications on your phones at college and independently at home.

  • Complete work experience.

  • Take part in enrichment opportunities such as clubs, walking groups, festivals and trips.

We regularly work with Rochdale Food Bank, Rochdale Soup Kitchen, Treesponsibility and Communitea Rooms.

Prosp User 4

After your intial assessment, you will know your ESOL level and class. On completion of the ESOL course, and when you pass your assessments, you will either move up to the next ESOL Level or you may be able to progress onto a Level 1 vocational course at the college. Past learners have found work in IT, Sports, Hair and Beauty, Health Care, Childcare, Accounting and The Arts.
