Course Overview

These courses are for adults aged 19+ on or before the 31st of August.

16-18 year olds will be offered relevant English and/or Maths qualifications alongside their full-time study programme and do not need to apply separately.

This course is free if you do not currently hold GCSE English at Grade A*-C (or 9-4 on the grading system from 2017 onwards). Please email enquiries@hopwood.ac.uk for further fee information.

Assessments will determine the outcome of the level of course you will be offered - this may be Functional Skills or GCSE.

GCSE English Language is a qualification which is crucial to gain employment and access to further or higher education. It forms part of the minimum entry requirements for a wide range of careers including nursing, teaching and the police force. Studying this subject will also help you develop your skills and confidence in reading, writing and speaking & listening.

Functional Skills English courses are ideal for adults wishing to refresh their skills. These qualifications will help you progress on to GCSE, other further education or may help you gain employment.

Courses take place at our Rochdale campus and we have both daytime and evening classes available. Please complete an online application or attend one of our Open Days to complete a skills assessment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - GCSE

A recent GCSE English Language qualification at Grade D or Grade 3 or a recent Level 2 English Functional Skills qualification.

All students must take a GCSE English Language assessment which is required to find the right study level for each applicant. If you are unsuccessful in achieving a place on the GCSE English Language, you may be re-directed towards a Functional Skills English course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS – FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

Before you enrol, we will make sure you are directed to the right level of course for you through an English assessment/interview. You should be able to state which skills you wish to improve, have clear goals you wish to achieve and be able to work independently.

If English is not your first language, you may need to complete ESOL qualifications before progressing onto these qualifications.

English Language is arguably the most important GCSE subject, being a necessary requirement for most further and higher education courses, as well as a wide range of jobs. You will learn how to analyse writers’ use of language to convey their views, ideas and values. To do this you will engage with a range of fiction and non-fiction writing from the 19th to 21st century. You will also learn how to write in a range of styles for different audiences and purposes. This will include both imaginative and transactional writing.

PROGRESSION - GCSE

GCSE English Language is an essential subject for progression to many other courses. Many universities and employers require that you have at least a grade 4 in this subject.

PROGRESSION – FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

On successful completion of the course you will receive a Functional Skills qualification in English at either Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2. You may then progress to the next level of English, to a GCSE course, or to other further education courses.
