Course Overview

Our Skills for Life courses accommodate learners aged 16-24 who have challenges/barriers to entering education, employment or training. They are designed for students who want to gain some qualifications in a mixture of life, vocational, functional skills or in a chosen vocational area.

This course helps develop the necessary skills for independence in order to make positive decisions about your future which may involve a working life.

Courses are nationally accredited and offer a variety of opportunities including enrichment, work placements, sports, trips, visits and guest speakers. Students will also gain functional skills in English, maths and ICT at an appropriate level.

There is also a great work experience opportunity for all students at our in-house Thinc Café where they can learn to handle money, serve food and learn how to provide good customer service, improving their independence skills.

  • Building confidence

  • Understanding relationships

  • Outdoor pursuits

  • Using public transport

  • Supported employment opportunities

  • Working as a volunteer

This course is taught at our Middleton campus, located in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

Prosp User 1

Qualification

Qualification
Certificate in Independent Living - Looking After Yourself and Your Home (Entry 2)

No formal entry requirements to begin this course. Students will be taught Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT alongside the main course.

Prosp User 2

Topics on this course include:

  • Health & fitness

  • Using public transport

  • Accessing helping services

  • Getting about safely

  • Making choices

  • Personal awareness

  • Working as a volunteer

Prosp User 3

Students are encouraged to work as volunteers within the community and are able to gain work experience in our Thinc Café. Here they learn to handle money, serve food and give good customer service, improving their independence skills.

They are also able to work on part of the canal regeneration programme which improves communication and personal presentation skills and support many college events such as open days and the community fun day

Prosp User 4

Following this course, learners are able to progress onto the Life Skills Plus course, the Work Skills programme or other vocational areas within college.
